Hahn-In Christian Reformed Church is a vibrant community of believers gathered to worship God in the greater Grand Rapids area of Michigan.
On October 5, 1975, God placed in the hearts of a small group of Korean Christians a desire to worship together. Under the leadership of Rev. John Oak, who was then studying at Calvin Theological Seminary, they held their first worship service, marking the beginning of our church. To establish a firmer ecclesial foundation, the congregation officially joined the Christian Reformed Church in North America on June 14, 1981.
At first, the church was called Korean Church of Grand Rapids—simply indicating a church for Koreans. As more Korean churches were established in the area, our congregation began using the distinctive name Hahn-In Churchas a proper name.
This name also carries a deeper spiritual meaning. Ephesians 4:13 says: “Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” In Korean, “Hahn-In” can be heard as “one mature person.” The name thus points not only to individual spiritual growth but also to the church growing together as the bride of Christ toward his fullness.
Hahn-In began as a community for Koreans, but we seek to become an inclusive community in which every barrier is broken down in Jesus Christ. Through the grace of Christ, who made Jews and Gentiles one, we desire to proclaim the gospel without regard to race, age, or background and to strengthen the members of Christ’s body both spiritually and physically.
Our goal is not merely to survive as Korean immigrants in American society but to contribute actively to the church as the body of Christ. Our mission is for each member to discover their gifts and abilities, serve the church and the local community through them, and participate in the growth of God’s kingdom.
Today, Hahn-In brings together people of diverse backgrounds and generations, including first-generation immigrants, professionals working in the Holland area, and students from Calvin University. We serve one another and walk the journey of faith together. As one family in Christ, we love and encourage one another and seek to live for the glory of God.
